Drew Brophy: Making Things Look Cool

BUFF® Staff / 5-11-2016

When Drew Brophy was in high school, his guidance counselor told him, "Drew, you can’t just surf and paint your whole life." But ever since then, Drew has been proving her wrong.

A self-described "professional artist and ambassador of standup adventure," Drew often says, "It’s my job to make things look cool."

Born in 1971, he began his career painting production surfboards. In the 1990s, he had the opportunity to pursue his own style of painting using Uni Posca water-based paint pens. Soon his career took off. His paintings and surfboards were in high demand, and artists around the world began copying his techniques.

Drew's paintings invariably feature bright colors, and they often include the water and waves that have inspired him since he began surfing as a very small boy. In recent years, he's also become intensely interested in weather and physics, and many of his newer works incorporate elements of sacred geometry.

You can find Drew's paintings on a wide variety of apparel and merchandise, including BUFF® headwear and gloves. And Drew says he frequently wears BUFF® headwear on his adventures. "As an avid waterman and adventurer, I was stoked to be able to partner up with Buff, Inc." he said. "Their headwear is a necessity when I’m paddling long distances or hiking."

Drew knows a thing or two about paddling long distances. In 2010 he and whitewater expert Seth Warren became the first people ever to standup paddle the Colorado River all the way through the Grand Canyon. The epic adventure took 16 days as they traversed 225 miles of the river, navigating through 125 different rapids.

These days, Drew continues to paint and surf nearly every day. His artwork is for sale at drewbrophy.com, and he also accepts commissions for custom pieces. In addition, dozens of companies have licensed his work or have invited him to participate in promotional events. He frequently paints live, allowing fans to experience the process and see him transform blank canvas, surfboards and everyday objects into works of art.

Drew is very active on social media, and you can find him on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, and Pinterest.
