3 Reasons to Start Cycling

Rebecca Rusch / 6-17-2016

1.  Cycling is a forever sport and ANYONE can do it.

You learned to ride a bike as a kid.  If you could do it when you were 5, you can do it now.  It’s one of the few sports that spans generations and you can do it til a ripe old age.  I know lots of athletes who found cycling because they were recovering from a knee or hip injury.  It’s the first activity and physical therapist will usually let you do.

2.  It’s Moving Meditation

When it’s time to unplug, there’s nothing like pedaling, especially on a mountain bike, to clear your head of nonsense and bring your attention into the present moment.  You can’t think about your finances, your to-do list, picking the kids up while you’re navigating single track on two wheels.  Cycling takes concentration and focus. Physically moving your legs and pumping your heart frees your head space.

3. OH, the places you’ll go!

There is no better vehicle to see the world, explore your backyard and get off the beaten path than a bicycle.  Walking is slow, but on a bike, you can see more, find out what’s around the next bend or over the next hill.  Unlike traveling in a car, you are traveling open air, so you can see, hear, even smell the surroundings and truly be part of the environment.  I’ve traveled from Idaho to Vietnam and back on two wheels.  I’ve even climbed (and ridden) Kilimanjaro on my bike.  Two wheels opens up all sorts of opportunity to explore and truly experience a place.

“You’re off to Great Places!

Today is your day!

Your mountain is waiting,

So…get on your way!”

"Rusch to Glory"
By Rebecca Rusch and Selene Yeager

Rebecca Rusch is one of the great endurance athletes of her generation, relentlessly fast on her feet, climbing mountains, or racing a bike. But she began her journey with an unceremonious start - by joining the high school track team to score a free tracksuit. This scrawny Chicago kid soon abandoned a predictable life, heading from home to wander the world and find adventure. Trekking through Borneo, mountain climbing in Patagonia, navigating the rivers of Vietnam, racing bikes across the Andes - Rusch's rambling saw her discover the adrenalin sport of adventure racing, stare down her demons, witness the tragic death of a friend, and rise toward a glass ceiling in sports.

Rusch to Glory is set in the exotic locales and extreme conditions that forged an extraordinary athlete from ordinary roots. Known today as the Queen of Pain for her incredible perseverance against all odds, Rebecca Rusch tells her story of transformation to inspire anyone to discover their own greatness.
